Exploration helps shape the future of a mine. Understanding the unit being reported is essential to understanding the announcement.

The announcement

Hindustan Zinc’s 17 September 2026 press-release listing reports an addition of 32 million tonnes of ore in FY26 and an exploration success rate above 88%. These are company-reported figures.

Reading the number

Ore is the material that contains valuable minerals. Its total weight is different from the amount of zinc within it, and from the metal ultimately recovered. The announcement should therefore not be read as 32 million tonnes of new zinc production.

The questions that follow

For a useful assessment of future supply, readers need the ore’s zinc grade, its resource or reserve classification, recovery assumptions and the proposed development timetable. Exploration news opens that discussion; it does not, by itself, establish annual metal output.

ZincThink’s interest is in making this journey understandable: from geological knowledge, through responsible development, to materials used in everyday life.
