Different forms of zinc serve different engineering roles, from protecting steel to supporting formulated lubricant performance.
Protecting and forming materials
Zinc coatings help protect steel against corrosion. Zinc is also used in alloys and die-cast components, while zinc oxide has applications in rubber and other formulated materials. These are distinct technologies with different performance requirements. [1]
The lubricant connection
Zinc dialkyldithiophosphates, commonly called ZDDP, are a family of additives used in many lubricants for antiwear performance. Lubrizol describes their use in hydraulic, engine and other lubricant systems. Their suitability depends on the whole formulation and its application. [2]
Precision in language. A zinc-containing additive is not simply powdered zinc. Material selection requires relevant standards, compatibility data and application testing.
The ZincThink perspective
Materials advocacy should start with a function: protecting infrastructure, reducing wear or meeting a product specification. The next questions are how well the material performs, under which conditions, and with what lifetime impacts.
We propose dossiers that put service life, maintenance, worker protection, emissions and end-of-life recovery into the same discussion. Responsible use includes transparent comparison with alternatives.
