Proposed open letter

Build for a longer material life

Intended audience: Infrastructure, procurement and materials-policy leaders

The way we specify materials influences maintenance, replacement and resource use over many years. ZincThink proposes that zinc applications, including corrosion protection, be considered through a transparent assessment of function and whole-life performance.

Three proposals for discussion

  1. Specify the outcome. Define the service environment and the required lifetime. Evaluate corrosion-protection options against the same technical requirements, rather than relying on material preference alone.
  2. Compare the full life cycle. Consider production, installation, maintenance and recovery together. Publish the assumptions behind environmental and cost comparisons.
  3. Plan for recovery. Ask how products can be collected, separated and responsibly processed when their service life ends. A statement that a material is recyclable should be accompanied by a realistic recovery pathway.

Our proposed position is simple: the case for any material becomes stronger when its benefits and limitations are open to scrutiny. We invite a practical discussion about evidence, standards and better long-term decisions.
